Exploring the Lung Meridian in Acupuncture

The lung meridian, a key component in traditional Chinese medicine theory, initiates energy circulation in the human body. It consists of an internal and an external pathway that influence respiratory health and the balance of chi.

The internal pathway of the meridian begins in the middle warmer, descends through the large intestine, ascends towards the stomach, and crosses the diaphragm to reach the lung. It then ascends through the trachea, passes through the throat, and emerges into the external pathway from the armpit.

The external pathway starts on the anterior face of the shoulder, descends along the anterolateral edge of the arm and forearm, passing through the center of the arm crease (lateral to the biceps brachii tendon). In the forearm, it descends to the styloid process and reaches the wrist, continues along the thenar eminence, and ends at the lateral angle of the thumb.

Key Points of the Lung Meridian

This meridian contains 11 points along its path, each with specific functions in the treatment of various respiratory and emotional conditions. The points include Zhong Fu, Yun Men, Tian Fu, Xia Bai, Chi Ze, Kong Zui, Lie Que, Jing Gu, Tai Yuan, Yu Ji, and Shao Shan, which are used to balance the flow of energy and promote lung health.

Clinical Applications and Benefits

Acupuncture, by stimulating points along the lung meridian, can help alleviate respiratory symptoms such as cough, breathing difficulties, and congestion. Additionally, it is used to promote emotional health, relieving stress and anxiety associated with imbalances in this meridian.

In summary, the lung meridian plays a fundamental role in the body’s energy circulation according to traditional Chinese medicine. Understanding its pathway and associated points not only provides insight into respiratory health but also offers therapeutic tools to address a variety of physical and emotional conditions.
