Percutaneous Electrolisis: An Innovative Technique in the Treatment of Muscular and Tendinous Injuries

Percutaneous electrolisis is an advanced technique that involves the insertion of a needle, usually guided by ultrasound, into the area to be treated, followed by the application of a galvanic continuous current (cathode). This triggers electrochemical changes in the target tissue, resulting in non-thermal electrochemical ablation.

In the tendon, it is applied to areas such as the paratendon (superficial), the core of the tendon (deep), and the interface areas with adjacent tissues. In the muscle, it focuses on areas such as the myotendinous, myoconnective, and myoaponeurotic junctions.

Importance of Ultrasound Guidance 

To accurately locate the aforementioned treatment areas, the use of ultrasound is highly recommended. This not only ensures the precise placement of the needle but also allows for monitoring the effect of the treatment by observing the appearance of gas around the needle, manifested as a hyperechoic cloud on the ultrasound.

Procedure and Considerations 

The procedure involves placing the electrode in a cranial area to the needle insertion point, followed by the application of the treatment with variable intensity and duration. Intensities typically range from 0.2 to 6 mA, with treatment times ranging from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the location and needs of the patient. It is recommended to perform one session per week and to avoid the use of NSAIDs or anti-inflammatory therapies during the inflammatory response phase.
